BISHOP VESEY'S GRAMMAR SCHOOL

Bishop Vesey’s Grammar School is a historical school founded in 1527 it holds the distinction of being one of the UK’s oldest schools. Over the course of its long and rich history, the school has cultivated a well-deserved reputation for producing accomplished academics and great thinkers of the country.

 

The school cultivates and nurtures students to become scholars with a life-long enthusiasm for learning with its rich curricular and extracurricular activities, Bishops Vesey’s Grammar School fosters a strong sense of character, through fullness and resilience in its students.

The school provides excellent opportunities in music offering tutorage in 19 different musical instruments as well as organising musical events and tours establishing confidence and community in students.

 

Competitive sports, both mental and physical, are encouraged at Bishop Vesey’s Grammar School through its diverse range of extra-curricular activities from chess to debating, to rugby and rowing.

 

Bishop Vesey’s Grammar School’s exemplary reputation is well founded as its students have competed in prestigious competitions such as:

  • The Rosslyn Park Sevens

  • County, Regional, and National Championships

  • Birmingham Junior NBA finals

  • Birmingham School Games

  • King Henry VIII Relay Race

There are 125 Year 7 places allocated based on proximity to the school and performance in the entrance exam. Gaining a place is extremely competitive due to its location, history, and scarcity of places. Bishop Vesey's no longer has a catchment area.
 
Bishop Vesey’s Grammar School entrance exam format and content may be completely new to prospective students as it is not covered in most of primary school teaching. It is crucial they know how to answer them to best portray their academic skill in the entrance examination.

THE EXAM

The exam takes place on the same day as the exam for the King Edward VI Foundation Schools in September 2024. It consists of two 60-minute GL papers dived into 4 sections:

  • English Comprehension

  • Verbal Reasoning

  • Mathematics

  • Non-verbal Reasoning

​

There will be a thirty-minute break in between the papers with the opportunity for students to eat a snack and freshen up. For more information on what the GL exams entail see our Exams page!
