KING EDWARD VI HANDSWORTH GRAMMAR SCHOOL FOR BOYS

King Edward VI Handsworth Grammar School for Boys is oldest selective school in Birmingham being established in 1862. Throughout the course of its history the school has become renowned for its diversely talented and publicly recognised alumni, such as: Sir David Cox, a Professor of Statistics at Imperial college London, and former President of the Bernoulli Society for Mathematical Statistics and Probability, Sir Edmund Crane, Chairman and founder of Hercules Cycles at one point the largest bicycle manufacturer across the globe, Geoffrey Templeman CBE, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Kent from 1963-80, amongst many others. King Edward VI Handsworth Grammar School Boys has earned itself an acclaimed reputation for producing exceptionally learned and gifted students.

There are 150 places available for admission into Year 7. Entry is dependent on entrance examination results and its catchment areas. The places are highly sought after earning consistently hundreds of applicants each year for King Edward VI Handsworth Boys.

The school aims to nurture intellectual curiosity, confidence, and a strong sense of community so that students are fully equipped to flourish at university and throughout life. Offering diverse extra-curricular activities in art, music, and sport every pupil can enhance skills to set them apart from other university applicants. Handsworth Boys is rated outstanding in every category by Ofsted and examination results are consistently well above the national average demonstrating the quality of schooling provided there.

In the Classroom

The high demand gives the school the opportunity to select the students that demonstrate the highest academic promise in the entrance examinations and so it is crucial to obtain as much practice under accurate test conditions as possible.

THE EXAM

King Edward VI Handsworth School for Boys is part of the King Edward VI Foundation and the King Edward VI Academy Trust. All schools within the consortium take the same exam on the same day.

The exam takes place in September 2024. It consists of two 60-minute-long papers dived into 4 sections:

  • English Comprehension

  • Verbal Reasoning

  • Mathematics

  • Non-verbal Reasoning

​
